Release Notes

This web part has been packaged into a solution. Once installed, you can use it on any page within your SharePoint environment. This release changes the image URL to an absolute path. Fair warning, I have not had time to extensively test this out (i.e. using alternate access mappings). If you don't need to use this web part in a sub-site collection (i.e. http://sharepoint/sites/PublishingSiteCollection) I recommend you stick with the release.

New Installation

  1. Download the WSP file, save it to the %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN\ folder on your SharePoint server
  2. Go to the command prompt, and navigate to the same folder you saved the WSP file to (cd /d %CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN\)
  3. Add the solution: stsadm -o addsolution -filename SPAdRotator.wsp
  4. Deploy the solution: stsadm -o deploysolution -name SPAdRotator.wsp -allcontenturls -allowgac -local (Note: Use -immediate instead of -local if you are deploying this on a SharePoint farm)
  5. Make the Web Part available to the site collection:
    1. Open up a browser and login to your SharePoint site.
    2. From the root site, go to Site Actions -> Site Settings -> Modify All Site Settings
    3. Underneath the Galleries column, click on Web Parts
    4. On the toolbar, click New
    5. Scroll all the way down to the bottom, then check the checkbox next to the SPAdRotator.SPAdRotator entry.
    6. Scroll back up to the top, then click on Populate Gallery
  6. You can now add the web part to any page, in the exact same fashion that you would add any other web part (Look for the SPAdRotator Web Part underneath the Miscellaneous category)
  7. Once you've added the web part to the page, use the drop down menu and click on Modify Shared Properties At the bottom, underneath Query, provide a list name. You can use any Image Library as the source list.

If you have installed a previous version of SPAdRotator, you can use the following STSADM command in lieu of the commands above: stsadm -o upgradesolution -name SPAdRotator.wsp -filename SPAdRotator.wsp -local -allowgac (Note: Be sure you have saved the .WSP file to the location in step 1 above, and use -immediate instead of -local if you are deploying this on a SharePoint farm)

If after upgrading you receive the following error:
Web Part Error: A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Page cannot be displayed or imported. The type could not be found or it is not registered as safe.
Edit the page the web part is on, delete the web part from the page (Be sure to click Edit -> Delete, don't just close it), then add the web part back to the page.
